Become a CPA Member

Your route to professional membership.

Understand what to prepare, how your starting point is assessed and how education and experience come together.

The direct answer

How do I become a CPA England member?

Membership eligibility brings together an appropriate entry route, required academic achievement, relevant supervised experience and a commitment to professional standards.

Your route begins with an individual review. Prior qualifications or experience may affect where you start, but exemptions and membership are not automatic.

Understand your likely starting point

Review the published entry requirements, qualification structure and membership guidance. Applicants with alternative qualifications or relevant experience may request guidance.

  • Compare your education with the entry criteria
  • Review all qualification levels
  • Identify any questions before applying
Prepare your evidence

Create a complete, readable record

Collect the documents needed to understand your education and experience. Clear evidence supports a fair and efficient assessment.

  • Certificates and academic transcripts
  • Subject or module descriptions where needed
  • Employment and supervised-experience records
Receive an assessment

Confirm your entry and exemptions

CPA England reviews the relevant evidence and advises the applicable route. Exemption decisions consider prior learning and supporting information.

  • Each case is considered individually
  • Evidence may be checked or clarified
  • No exemption should be assumed in advance
Complete your academic route

Build knowledge and professional judgement

Progress through the required levels and assessments. Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Professional Level completion brings a statement of academic transcript, with no certificate or award. Completing the Strategic Level brings a statement of academic transcript and an official examination-completion letter. Candidates may apply for Affiliate Membership, or apply for full membership after completing three years of relevant practical experience and meeting the admission requirements.

  • Plan study against the current syllabus
  • Meet examination requirements
  • Retain records of completed stages
Develop through practice

Entry guidance

Different backgrounds, a consistent standard.

The standard school-leaver route is based on Ordinary and Advanced Level achievement, while allowing alternative qualifications to be considered. Mature applicants aged 23 or above may also be considered under the stated conditions.

Prior learning and professional experience can be relevant to an exemption review. The decision depends on the scope, level, currency and evidence of that learning.

Please note: Always use the current application, entry, exemption and fee documents. Contact CPA England where your circumstances do not match a published route.

Common questions

Answers before you apply.

These answers explain the overall route. An individual assessment confirms how the requirements apply to you.

Do I need an accounting degree to begin?

Not necessarily. Entry routes vary by educational background, and relevant prior learning may be considered through an individual exemption assessment.

Are exemptions automatic?

No. Exemptions are assessed individually from relevant qualifications, transcripts, subject coverage and supporting evidence.

How much supervised experience is required?

Membership eligibility requires a minimum of three years of relevant supervised experience.

Does completing the examinations automatically make me a member?

No. Completing the Strategic Level brings a statement of academic transcript and an official examination-completion letter. Candidates may apply for Affiliate Membership, or apply for full membership after completing three years of relevant practical experience and meeting the admission requirements.

Where should I begin?

Review the entry and exemption guidance, gather your academic and experience evidence, and contact CPA England if you need an individual route assessment.
